Equity and Inclusion

The Arts Undergraduate Society is committed to creating a community that fosters an inclusive, equitable, and respectful environment for all students. The Equity and Inclusion team was founded on the principles of student advocacy, ongoing learning through discussion, and maximizing available resources for equity-seeking groups. We believe in the collective responsibility of the UBC community to uphold these values to ensure that all students, faculty, and staff members feel welcomed and supported.

Therefore to advance our goal in the UBC Arts Community, the Equity and Inclusion team focuses on various areas:

  1. Event Planning
    • E&I largely centers around hosting public events around current affairs with the goal of public awareness. We collaborate with other on-campus organizations and clubs to expand the impact of our events and engage the wider UBC community.
  2. Advocacy
    • Going beyond a single event, we strive to advocate for equity-related issues in the Arts community. We envision a community in which human rights are embedded in all areas of academic, work and campus life. Importantly, empowering the voices of all the diverse individuals in the Arts community is essential to pave the way for advocacy and justice.
  3. Code of Procedures review
    • The AUS is governed by the code of procedure, a set of rules that oversees the organization’s operation. The E&I team works on amending and drafting the relevant chapters to institutionalize equity-related practices within the organization.
  4. Internal AUS support
    • E&I also initiates equity-related conversations within the AUS. This includes fostering allyship during AUS-wide orientations, supporting the engagement team with content review & social media campaigns, and collaborating with other portfolios on equity-related initiatives.
